About the archive

Basketball was invented in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the winter of 1891 — and that's where this site starts, too. We are basketball fans first: fans of the barnstormers and the set shot, the AAU dynasties, and the regional stars whose names never made it into a national set.

As exclusive basketball collectors, we kept running into the same problem. Piecing together a Hall of Famer's cardboard story means digging through auction archives, decades-old checklists, forum threads, and dealers' memories. There is no single, complete source for Hall of Fame rookie and pre-rookie cards. This archive is our attempt to build one.

The series

Before the Rookie works through all 209 men inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as players, one at a time, in the order they were enshrined — starting with the inaugural class of 1959. For each player we identify his true rookie card and track down every card that came before it.

What counts

The hobby debates whether oddball issues are really "cards" at all. We take the inclusive view: regional issues, magazine stickers, advertising sheets, postcards — if it pictured the player before his true rookie card, it belongs here.
