Before the Rookie: Why This Archive Exists

I was born in Springfield, Massachusetts — the city where James Naismith nailed up two peach baskets in the winter of 1891 and invented basketball. You could say the game was in my blood before I ever held a card.
We are, first and foremost, huge basketball fans. We love the history of this game: the barnstormers and the set shot, the AAU dynasties, the regional stars whose names never made it into a national set. Collecting, for us, has always been a way of holding that history in our hands.
But there has always been a frustration. As an exclusive basketball collector, chasing Hall of Fame rookie cards — and the pre-rookie cards that came before them — means piecing a player's cardboard story together from a dozen scattered places: an auction archive here, a decades-old checklist there, a forum thread, a dealer's memory. For all the love this hobby gets, there does not seem to be one authoritative, complete source for Hall of Fame rookie and pre-rookie cards.
That is what we hope to create.
This series, Before the Rookie, will work through every player in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame — all 209 men inducted as players — one at a time, in the order they were enshrined, starting with the inaugural class of 1959. For each man we will identify his true rookie card and track down every card that came before it: the regional issues, the magazine stickers, the advertising sheets and postcards. A quick note on what counts: the hobby openly debates whether those oddball issues are really "cards" at all. This series takes the inclusive view — if it pictured the player before his true rookie card, it belongs here.
And we know going in that this archive will never be finished in the way a printed book is finished. The hobby is always evolving, and new discoveries continue to be made — cards unknown for a century surface in estate finds and attic boxes every year. So we are asking for your help. If you know of a pre-rookie we missed, hold a card we have never seen, or spot an error in anything we publish, tell us. Comments and feedback are how this archive grows, and completeness is the whole point.
